Impressionism began in France in the late 19th century, around the 1870s, when a group of artists rejected the strict rules of academic painting and chose to paint modern life as they observed it. Instead of detailed studio compositions, Impressionist painters worked outdoors, capturing changing light, atmosphere, and the passing moment directly from nature.
Artists such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Camille Pissarro used loose brushstrokes, bright color, and visible paint texture to represent how a scene felt rather than how it was precisely defined. Shadows were often painted with color instead of black, and forms were softened to convey movement and natural light.
