Ukiyo-e Art Movement & Paintings

Ukiyo-e was a Japanese art movement that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries during the Edo period. The term means “pictures of the floating world” and referred to scenes of everyday urban life, entertainment, and nature.

Artists created prints and paintings depicting actors, courtesans, landscapes, and seasonal views. Flat color areas, bold outlines, and strong composition replaced Western perspective, producing clear and decorative images. The movement later influenced European artists and modern design.
