Figures press close together at the edge of the Jordan, their bodies compressed into a shallow, frontal band that reads almost like a frieze. Christ stands at the centre, water at his shins, while the figures around him hold their poses with a stillness that feels ceremonial rather than casual. About Baptism of Christ

This is Vilmos Aba-Novak working at the height of his engagement with Christian subject matter, a period in which he brought the language of Hungarian interwar painting to bear on themes that academic art had long treated with restraint. Aba-Novak had little interest in restraint. He built his religious scenes the way he built his murals, with blocky, monumental figures, thick outlines, and a palette that favours earth tones warmed by sudden passages of red or ochre. The baptism becomes less an illustration of scripture than a study in human bodies arranged with the gravity of ritual.

The brushwork carries much of the meaning here. Aba-Novak laid his paint in broad, confident strokes, leaving the surface visibly worked rather than smoothed away, and that roughness gives the figures a raw, almost sculptural presence.
