About Prairie Meadows Burning
George Catlin spent much of his career recording the American West at a moment when few American painters had gone there with a brush. The composition is built on that horizontal band, land below and open sky above, with the fire itself acting as the single interruption that pulls the eye across the surface rather than into it. Figures, where present, are small against the scale of the land, which was part of the point for Catlin: the human presence is real but not the subject.
