Description
A hall of columns and coffered ceilings opens onto a feast in full swing, guests gathered in silks and ruffs beneath soaring stonework, and it is this collision of grand architecture with human company that gives the scene its pull. Bartholomeus Van Bassen was drawn to spaces like this, part invention, part memory of the churches and palaces he knew as an architect himself, and here he populates one with the easy sociability of a banquet.
About Renaissance Interior with Banqueters
The composition works on two registers at once. The architecture recedes in careful perspective, marble floors and ranked columns drawing the eye toward a vanishing point deep in the hall, while in the foreground the banqueters supply movement, gesture, and colour against all that cool stone. Van Bassen handles the light so that it warms the figures and their table while leaving the surrounding structure in a more measured, daylight calm, a contrast that keeps the eye moving between the human scene and the space that contains it.
This balance of architectural fantasy and genre painting places the work at a point in his career when he was combining the two skills for which he was known, the trained eye of a designer of buildings and the patient hand of a painter of figures. Few artists managed that combination with such ease, and the result reads equally as an interior study and as a record of Renaissance social life.
The hand-painted reproduction
Tell us the size you have in mind and one of our painters will begin work on your museum quality reproduction, building it stroke by stroke in oil on canvas rather than printing it. They study the original closely, matching the warmth of the candlelit or daylit palette and the cool grey of the marble, then rebuild the architecture in real brushwork, so the coffered ceiling, the tiled floor, and the folds of drapery all carry the texture of paint laid by hand. What arrives at your door is a painted object with its own surface and depth, an oil painting reproduction made to be looked at as closely as the original rewards.
