Painted in the 1490s for the refectory of the Dominican monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, under the rule of Ludovico Sforza, the composition breaks from the static, ceremonial Last Suppers that came before it. Leonardo groups the apostles in threes, each cluster caught in a different register of feeling: Peter leaning in with a knife still in his grip, Thomas raising a finger in disbelief, John folding inward in quiet grief. Judas sits among them, not set apart, his face already shadowed by what he has done. Christ alone stays still, hands open on the table, while everything else in the room moves around him.
The architecture does the rest of the work. Coffered ceiling beams, three receding windows, and the long table line all drive toward a single vanishing point behind the head of Christ, so the eye returns to him no matter where it wanders first. Light falls even and cool across the room, the palette held to muted reds, blues, and ochres against plaster walls, a restraint that lets the gestures of the apostles carry the drama instead of colour or shadow. It is one of the clearest demonstrations in Renaissance painting of perspective built to serve a story rather than to show off.
