Court painters at Rudolf II favoured portraits and small mythological pictures that could be admired at close range in a private cabinet. Hans von Aachen worked mostly in that register, but here he attempts something larger and more public in ambition: a crowded allegorical statement about good rulership, built around the return of the Golden Age under Saturn.
