The Christmas Collection

Famous Christmas Paintings
Recreated by Hand

Long before Christmas cards, painters told the Christmas story: the shepherds in the night, the star, the three kings with their gifts, the Holy Family's flight into Egypt. And then there is the season itself, snow on Flemish villages, skaters on frozen canals and Monet's magpie on a snowy gate. This collection gathers famous Christmas and winter paintings by Bruegel, Georges de La Tour, Mantegna, Burne-Jones, Avercamp, Monet and others. Every painting is hand-painted in oil on real canvas, and makes a gift that lasts far longer than the season.

The Nativity and the Shepherds

In the middle of the night, by candlelight or the glow of the child himself, the shepherds kneel. Georges de La Tour, Lorenzo Lotto, Barocci and Poussin each imagined the first Christmas night.

02

The Star and the Three Kings

Following a star, three kings arrive from the East with gold, frankincense and myrrh. Mantegna painted them up close, Bruegel crowded them into a Flemish stable, and Burne-Jones turned the star into a glowing angel.

03

The Flight into Egypt

Warned in a dream, Joseph takes Mary and the child away by night. Elsheimer painted one of the first realistic starry skies in art for this scene; Gerard David and Tanner made the journey tender and human.

04

Winter in the Old Masters

Bruegel and Avercamp turned the Flemish and Dutch winter into a festival: hunters returning through the snow, villages counting heads for the census at Bethlehem, whole towns out skating on frozen rivers.

05

Snow, Light and Winter Days

The Impressionists discovered that snow is never white: it is blue, violet, pink and gold. Monet's Magpie, Sisley's Louveciennes and Hassam's Union Square glow with cold light.
