Description
A white-robed angel stands among weathered crosses and flowers beneath a muted evening sky. In Angel of Sadness, also known as Angel in a Cemetery, Wilhelm Kotarbiński brings together the stillness of a graveyard and the striking presence of dark, outstretched wings. The work is generally dated to around 1900.
The pale gown and golden halo draw the eye toward the figure, while the angular wings spread across the sky. Low light, distant water and dark vegetation give the landscape a hushed atmosphere. The bowed gaze and folded hands suggest contemplation, leaving space for a personal reading of grief, remembrance and consolation.
ByMuseum artists recreate this composition by hand in oil on canvas. Particular attention goes to the contrast between the flowing white fabric and dark feathers, the soft transitions of the sky, and the small flowers and crosses in the foreground.
