Description
A ewe stands in the snow beside the small body of a lamb, its head lowered toward the ground. Black crows gather around them, with several birds close to the pair and others spaced across the pale field. The ewe occupies the center of the open landscape, while the birds form a broken dark ring around it. A low horizon leaves most of the upper canvas to the cloudy sky.
About Anguish Reproduction
Cold whites and grays cover the ground and sky. The pale fleece carries of the ewe a warmer tone than the snow, and its dark face turns downward. The crows are rendered as distinct silhouettes, some standing and others with wings lifted. Their sharp black shapes contrast with the soft, nearly unbroken snow and draw attention to the small forms at the feet of the ewe.
The picture uses distance and stillness to make the scene feel exposed. Sparse marks on the plain provide little shelter, and the low line of the land keeps the ewe and birds clearly visible. The scattered flock gives the foreground a rhythm without filling the landscape. Light remains diffuse, with no strong cast shadows, so the contrast between pale snow and black plumage carries the composition. Snow surrounds the small lamb, while the lowered head of the ewe and the dark silhouettes of the crows hold the center of the open field.
