Description
A single band of scarlet cuts across a field of near total black, and the eye keeps returning to it before taking in anything else. That deliberate withholding of colour, and the sudden release of it, is the whole engine of Black and Red, a painting by John White Alexander that trades incident for arrangement and asks to be read as pure design before it is read as a figure at all.
About Black and Red
The composition centres on a female form whose costume or drapery supplies the red note against a ground of deep, almost velvet black, and the tension between the two holds the picture together the way a single chord can hold a room. Alexander came to this kind of restraint through the example of Whistler and the wider Aesthetic movement, where a title naming colour rather than subject was itself a statement of intent: the painting wanted to be looked at as an arrangement of tone and shape, not as a story to be decoded. Getting black to read as a colour rather than an absence, and getting red to sit warm against it without either tone collapsing the other, called for exactly the kind of tonal control that marks the strongest years of his figure painting.
Reproducing that balance asks as much of the copyist as it did of Alexander himself. Each ByMuseum oil painting reproduction of Black and Red is built up in layers of hand-mixed oil paint on artist-grade canvas, with a trained painter matching the depth of the blacks and the particular warmth of the red rather than simply matching a photograph, so the surface keeps the brushwork and the slight variations in paint thickness that a printed copy cannot hold.
The hand-painted reproduction
Well over a century after it was painted, this famous painting still works on a viewer the same way it was built to: through colour first, and everything else after. Owning a hand-painted version means keeping that immediacy on a wall rather than on a screen. Each canvas arrives as:
- A hand-painted oil on canvas reproduction, not a printed copy
- Available in multiple sizes to suit the wall it will hang on
- Finished and presented ready for gallery-style hanging
- Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity
- Delivered with free worldwide shipping, with no charge to any country
