About Boaters on the Yerres

Painted in the late 1870s, when Caillebotte was turning his attention from the streets of Paris to the leisure of the river at Yerres, the picture places its rowers close to the front of the canvas, cropping the scene as though caught mid glance rather than composed from a distance. That framing, borrowed from photography and from the compositional daring of his Impressionist circle, gives the water and the boats an immediacy that a more conventional arrangement would have softened. Light falls unevenly across the scene, catching the near boater and dissolving into looser, broken touches toward the far bank.

The brushwork itself carries much of the pictures character: quick, directional strokes for the water, more deliberate modelling for the figures, so that surface and subject seem to share the same rhythm.
