Bierstadt built his reputation on the sublime scale of the American wilderness, and here he carries that same instinct northward into a landscape stripped of the greenery that softened his Rocky Mountain and Sierra views. The Asulkan Glacier fills most of the composition, a slow river of ice cradled by peaks whose bare rock catches a light so clear it borders on crystalline.
