By the middle of the 1860s, John Brett had turned away from the crowded human incident of his early Pre-Raphaelite years and toward the coastline itself, spending long stretches at anchor in a boat so he could study the sea and sky at close range. Cardigan Bay belongs to this later phase of his career, when the Welsh coast gave him the wide horizons and shifting weather he needed for a painting built almost entirely from observation.
