About Dark Times
Imre Amos painted during a period of mounting anxiety in Europe, and that pressure shows in how the forms in this composition seem to press against one another rather than settle into open space. Figures and shapes emerge less through outline than through the buildup of tone, layer over layer, until a form holds its place on the canvas without needing a hard edge to define it. This was consistent with the wider expressionist project of using paint handling itself, rather than illustration, to carry feeling.
The mood depends on where light falls and where it is withheld. Amos worked in passages of near darkness broken by small, deliberate accents, and the viewer has to spend time with the picture before the structure beneath the shadow becomes clear.
