Description
Thick, dry strokes build the armour of the central figure, laid on in short passes that let the ground colour show through at the edges. The brushwork stays visible and rough where it needs to be, especially across the metal plating and the crowded mass of small figures pressing behind her, and this roughness gives the picture its charge before a viewer even reads the subject. Colour arrives in narrow bands of rust, ash grey and dull gold, with fire and smoke opening a bright gap in the upper right that pulls the eye back and forth across the panel.
About De Dulle Griet
Out of that surface comes Griet herself, striding forward with sword and basket while the mouth of hell gapes open behind her. Pieter Brueghel the Elder sets her against a landscape gone strange, ships burning on a distant sea, tiny demons swarming the rooftops, a world tipped into chaos that the figures around her seem to accept as ordinary. The composition is dense but never confused; small groups of figures are picked out with a few deft touches while the background dissolves into looser, smokier passages, so the eye has somewhere to rest between the crowded foreground and the burning distance.
This period of the career of Elder shows him working at the edge of proverb, satire and nightmare, using folk imagery to say something about greed, war and human folly that still reads clearly today. The ByMuseum version of this painting is a hand-painted oil painting reproduction, worked by trained artists directly in oil on artist-grade canvas, matching the original palette stroke by stroke rather than reproducing it as flat colour. The impasto of the armour, the smoky transitions in the sky and the fine detail in the smaller figures are rebuilt by hand, so the surface carries real texture and depth rather than the even finish of a printed fine art reproduction.
The hand-painted reproduction
Four centuries on, the painting still holds attention because its strangeness has not worn thin; the crowd of grotesques and the burning horizon keep giving up new detail on each viewing. Owning a painted version means living with that same density of paint and incident on your own wall, not a flattened copy of it.
