By the early decades of the twentieth century, Mathias J. Alten had settled into a working rhythm that took him from formal European training into the farmland and industry of the American Midwest, and it was there that draft horses became a recurring subject for him. These were not showpiece animals but the working stock of farms and freight yards, the kind of horse an artist would see daily and come to know by weight and gait rather than by pedigree. Draft Horses grew out of that familiarity, a study made close to home rather than a commissioned scene.
About Draft Horses
The composition centers on the animals themselves, their heavy bodies filling the canvas with a stillness that suggests rest after labor or a pause in harness. Alten observed them with the eye of a painter used to animal subjects: the slope of muscle across the shoulder, the coarse fall of a mane, the way a coat catches or absorbs light depending on the angle of the body.
