About Eagle Dance, Choctaw
George Catlin painted among the Choctaw and dozens of other nations in the 1830s, travelling the American interior with the stated purpose of recording customs and likenesses before they vanished under the pressure of westward expansion. Here he turns to a ritual performance, the eagle dance, and builds the picture around the dancer at its centre, limbs angled to suggest flight, regalia rendered with a care that stops short of ornament for its own sake. The surrounding figures are kept quieter, placed to frame rather than compete, so the eye returns again and again to the central gesture.
