Description
Painted in 1912, Falling Stars (Sternschnuppen) is a quietly intimate night landscape by the German Symbolist Franz von Stuck. The panel shows a couple seated together on a hillside above a body of water, their backs turned to the viewer as they gaze up at a sky thick with stars. Two shooting stars streak across the darkness above them, the momentary flashes of light picking out the contours of the hills and the still water below. The figures are widely identified as portraits of the artist and his wife, Mary von Stuck, making the work a personal, unguarded departure from the mythological and allegorical subjects for which Stuck is best known.
Rather than dramatizing the celestial event, Stuck lets the composition rest on stillness and closeness. The deep blues and blacks of the night are softened by the scattering of stars and the two brief trails of the meteors, creating a mood that is tender and contemplative rather than ominous.
