Falls of Niagara from Below by Albert Bierstadt puts the viewer at the base of the cataract, looking up into the descending mass of water rather than out across it from a safe overlook. This inversion of the usual tourist view was a deliberate choice: instead of a picturesque panorama, the painter builds an experience of immersion, with mist rising around the frame and the vertical drop of water pressing down on the viewer standing below.
