Mathias J Alten spent much of his working life travelling between his Grand Rapids studio and the open country of the American Midwest, and Grand River Flats belongs to those working seasons when he set up before the low bottomland that few painters bothered to notice. There was no patron behind this canvas, no commissioned view of a landmark; it was the kind of unremarkable stretch of river terrain that rewarded patience rather than ambition, and Alten treated it with the same seriousness he brought to grander subjects.
About Grand River Flats
The composition is built on a wide horizontal sweep, flat ground giving way to water and then to a sky that occupies more of the canvas than the land beneath it.
