Description
When a New England merchant family commissioned a portrait to mark a marriage or a milestone of social standing, the sitter chosen to represent that dignity was often dressed and posed with as much care as the painter brought to his brush. Hannah Babcock, recorded here as Mrs. John Bours, was one such sitter, and the painting that resulted places her within the settled, prosperous world of colonial Rhode Island society, a world in which Joseph Blackburn had, by the 1750s, become the portraitist of choice.
About Hannah Babcock (Mrs. John Bours)
The composition follows the conventions Blackburn favoured for his female subjects: a three-quarter pose, a steady and composed gaze, and a costume rendered with a level of attention that borders on the devotional. Silk catches the light in cool, silvery passages that warm where it folds against the body, and lace is built up in delicate, almost transparent layers that sit convincingly atop the fabric beneath. These are not incidental details. For Blackburn, the description of dress was inseparable from the description of character, and the sitter here reads as composed, self-possessed, and entirely at ease with the formality of the occasion.
Flesh tones throughout the painting move through subtle transitions of warm and cool, a technique that gives the face and hands a soft, breathing quality rather than a flat or waxen finish. This luminosity, paired with a restrained and harmonious palette, places the work firmly within the polished, decorative sensibility of the Rococo as it was absorbed and adapted by painters working in the American colonies, where English portrait conventions met a newer, plainer sense of social ambition.
The hand-painted reproduction
ByMuseum recreates this composition as a hand-painted oil painting reproduction, built layer by layer on artist-grade canvas rather than printed in a single mechanical pass. A trained painter matches the palette of the original by eye, working the lace, silk, and flesh tones until the surface carries the same depth and quiet luminosity as the source, and the result is a handmade oil painting with its own visible brushwork rather than a flattened copy.
