Description
Pale cream and rose sit against a background of near black in this La Fornarina reproduction, with a single stripe of green myrtle breaking the shadow at one side. The flesh tones carry faint pink and ochre underneath, warmed by a raking light that falls from the left. Against all this, the striped turban adds a note of gold and blue, the only pattern in a picture built mostly from bare skin and dark ground.
About La Fornarina Reproduction
Raphael Sanzio painted this half-length portrait in Rome between about 1518 and 1520, near the end of his life. A young woman sits with a pale cloth draped from the waist down, her torso bare, her right hand raised to cover part of her left breast. Her head is wrapped in an Eastern-style striped turban, and she turns her gaze slightly aside with a faint, knowing smile. The myrtle bush behind her, long linked with Venus, suggests this is a portrait built on affection rather than status.
On her upper arm she wears a narrow band inscribed with the signature of the artist, RAPHAEL VRBINAS, a detail long read as proof of personal feeling between painter and sitter. Tradition names her as Margherita Luti, daughter of a Roman baker, though scholars still argue the point. The painting has belonged to the Barberini collection in Rome since the seventeenth century and now hangs in the Galleria Nazionale dArte Antica at Palazzo Barberini.
Our studio turns this into a museum quality hand-painted oil painting reproduction, built up by hand rather than printed. A trained artist works from high-resolution reference images, laying in the soft modelling of the flesh, the sheen of the turban fabric, the inscribed armband, and the dark backdrop stroke by stroke. The result is a surface with real texture and depth of colour, something a printed copy cannot give you.
The hand-painted reproduction
Five centuries on, the picture still holds attention because of what it withholds: a name kept half secret, a gesture that covers as much as it reveals. Owning a painted version of that puts something with real history on your own wall, not a flat copy of it.
