About Laguna Beach

The composition sets a firm horizon against the irregular edges of rock and surf, letting the eye settle first on the meeting of land and water before drifting toward the softer transitions of sky. Alten was working in the years when American Impressionism had absorbed the lessons of plein air painting without abandoning structure, and Laguna Beach shows that balance: loose, broken strokes for the moving water and the haze of light on the horizon, firmer handling in the rock forms that anchor the scene.
