About Landscape with Herd of Buffalo on
Karl Bodmer painted the American West at a moment when few European artists had seen it directly. Travelling with the Prussian explorer Prince Maximilian in the early 1830s, he worked from direct observation, recording the terrain, the light and the wildlife of the frontier with a precision that owed as much to scientific illustration as to the Romantic landscape tradition he had trained in. This picture belongs to that expedition record, and it carries the double character of the best of his work: exact in its natural history, but composed with a painter eye for scale and atmosphere.
The herd is arranged not as a mass but as a rhythm, dark shapes thinning toward the edges of the canvas while the middle distance opens into pale, hazy space. Bodmer builds the land in horizontal bands, letting warm ochres and greys carry the foreground while cooler tones recede toward a sky rendered with a restraint that keeps the whole scene believably lit.
