Description
A small hermit kneels in a vast unfolding land, dwarfed by rock, river, and sky. This is the first thing the eye meets in Landscape with St Jerome: a saint reduced almost to a detail within a world that dwarfs him, and a landscape given the weight usually reserved for its human subject.
About Landscape with St Jerome
Simon Bening was among the last and finest miniaturists of the Flemish tradition, working in Bruges in the early decades of the sixteenth century when the illuminated manuscript was giving way to panel painting and print. Here he treats a familiar devotional theme, Jerome in the wilderness, with a naturalism that looks forward rather than back. Winding paths lead the eye through hills, trees, and distant buildings rendered with the fine, patient touch of a manuscript painter, while atmospheric perspective softens the far hills into blue haze. Light falls unevenly across the terrain, picking out a rooftop here, a bend in the river there, so that the whole surface seems to breathe with small, considered incident.
The colour moves from warm earth tones near the saint to cooler greens and greys further off, a device Bening used to suggest depth long before it became standard practice among landscape painters. Detail accumulates without ever overwhelming the quiet centre of the composition, so that St Jerome remains, however small, the point the eye returns to.
The hand-painted reproduction
Bringing this back into a painted object means matching that same movement from warm to cool, near to far. Our painters study the original palette and rebuild it stroke by stroke in oil on canvas, so the finished piece is a genuine fine art reproduction rather than a mechanical copy. Layers of paint are built up by hand to hold the texture of rock and foliage, and the surface keeps the slight unevenness of real brushwork, the kind of oil painting reproduction that rewards a close look rather than just a glance from across the room. Nothing about it is printed; every passage of colour has been laid down by a trained hand working directly from the composition.
