In a mirror on the back wall, faint and easy to miss, the king and queen of Spain appear, which means the royal couple sit somewhere near where the viewer stands. The doorway beyond, lit by daylight, holds a figure paused mid step, adding depth to a room already thick with implied space.

Light falls from the right and pools on the fair hair of the Infanta and the pale fabric of her dress, then fades into the brown shadow that fills most of the canvas, a passage of near darkness broken by scattered highlights on brass, silver, and skin.
