Description
Little Ophelia, painted by William Bouguereau in 1875, shows a young girl crowned with wildflowers, her gaze turned away from the viewer. The small canvas, about 55 by 46 cm in the original, turns the drowned heroine of Hamlet into a calm country child, and that quiet shift is what gives the picture its pull.
Bouguereau builds the face and shoulders from soft, warm light set against a dark green ground. Cornflowers, poppies and pale blossoms woven into her hair echo the flowers Ophelia gathers in the play, while the white blouse, gathered at the neck, catches the strongest highlights in the picture. Her hands rest on the curved handle of a wicker basket, a detail that grounds the literary title in everyday rural life.
The finish belongs to the French Academic tradition in which Bouguereau trained: smooth transitions of tone, carefully modelled skin and almost no visible brushwork. The painting rewards close looking, from the flush on the cheeks to the light passing through loose strands of hair.
At ByMuseum, Little Ophelia is painted by hand in oil on canvas by trained artists working from the full composition. Skin tones are built up in thin layers, as in the original, so the face keeps its glow and the background stays deep rather than flat.
