About Mix Ke Mote Skin Na, Iron
Catlin painted this portrait during his travels among the Native nations of the American frontier in the 1830s, a period when he set out to document tribal leaders and warriors before, as he feared, their ways of life vanished under westward expansion. The result is part ethnographic record, part sympathetic character study. Iron Horn is positioned with the directness typical of the Catlin portraits, upper body turned slightly, ornament and dress rendered with careful attention, the background kept quiet so nothing competes with the sitter himself.
