In the years after his family estate at Yerres passed out of his hands, Gustave Caillebotte turned increasingly to the garden at Petit Gennevilliers, where he grew roses among the vegetable beds and dahlias that occupied much of his later career. Rose Bush in Flower belongs to this private world of cultivation, painted not for a patron but for the pleasure of looking closely at something he had grown himself.
