Description
Roses and lilies fill the canvas edge to edge, the roses full and layered, the lilies rising above them in cleaner, more upright lines. Franz Bischoff turned to this pairing again and again because the two flowers work against each other so well: one dense and folded, the other open and spare. Set side by side, they give the eye plenty to compare and plenty to rest on.
About Roses and Lilies
Bischoff came to painting through porcelain decoration, where roses were a constant subject, and that early training shows in the ease with which he handles petals here. The color moves in soft steps rather than hard lines, pink sliding into cream, cream into a pale green shadow, so that each bloom seems to hold its own quiet light. The brushwork stays loose throughout, quick in places, more built up where the petals fold back on themselves, and it never tightens into the fussy detail that lesser flower painters relied on. By the time he painted works like this, in the early twentieth century, Bischoff had a firm reputation as one of the most capable floral painters in the country, and the confidence of that standing is visible in how little he seems to labor over the picture.
A ByMuseum reproduction of Roses and Lilies is painted by hand, not printed, so the character of that brushwork carries through to the surface you actually own. A trained artist works in oil on artist-grade canvas, matching the palette bloom by bloom and letting the paint sit with the same texture and thickness as the original. The result is a genuine oil painting reproduction, a painted object with visible strokes and a small amount of impasto where the color is thickest, rather than a flat copy of an image.
The hand-painted reproduction
Live with this painting for a while and it keeps giving something back. The petals catch light differently through the day, and small passages of brushwork that seemed incidental at first start to read as deliberate choices. It rewards the kind of looking that a fine art reproduction, done properly, is meant to invite.
