Description
Most of the portraits by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun flatter a patron into stillness, the sitter composed and a little remote. Here she turns that same skill on herself and gives it warmth instead of polish. This self-portrait in a straw hat reproduction keeps that warmth intact, the directness of her gaze meeting the viewer rather than drifting past them as so many of her society commissions do.
About Self-Portrait in a Straw Hat Reproduction
The painting shows Vigée Le Brun dressed as both a woman of fashion and a working painter, palette and brushes held loosely in one hand as if she had just set down her work to look up. A straw hat trimmed with flowers and a white ostrich feather frames her face, its texture picked up again in her hair and in the fall of her dress. A dark shawl crosses one shoulder against rose-pink satin, and sunlight falls across her skin and the satin in passages of soft shade and direct light. She based the pose on the portrait of Susanna Lunden by Rubens, long known as Le Chapeau de Paille, which she had seen in Antwerp in 1782, and she borrowed his handling of light along with his composition. This canvas is her own later replica of the self-portrait shown at the Paris Salon of 1782, painted again by her own hand rather than copied by an assistant.
ByMuseum paints this self-portrait in a straw hat reproduction entirely by hand in oil on canvas, brushstroke laid over brushstroke to match the rose of the gown, the softness of the plume, and the warm shade across her face. A trained painter works from the original, not a print run, so brush marks sit raised on the canvas and the paint carries real depth under light. The result is a hand-painted replica rather than a flat copy, made to be looked at closely the way the original asks to be looked at.
The hand-painted reproduction
It suits a collector who wants a working artist alongside the society portraits more usual in this period, or a room that holds a quiet, direct gaze well. It would sit just as easily as a gift for anyone who paints, or studies painting, or simply likes a face that looks straight back.
