Description
Description
One strap of the white chemise has slipped from the shoulder of the sleeping girl, and nobody in the picture seems to mind. This Sleeping Girl with a Cat reproduction carries that small, unguarded detail straight through to the surface of the canvas, along with the gray cat curled in her lap, equally drowsy, its fur built from the same loose, feathery strokes Renoir used for her skin and hair.
About Sleeping Girl with a Cat Reproduction
Angele dozes in a red armchair, her head tipped to one side, her eyes closed. She was a favourite model of Renoir in this period, and he painted her here with no sign that she knows she is being watched. The pose is informal almost to the point of being candid, a private moment rather than a staged one. Her striped stockings and cool blue skirt sit against the warm red of the chair, setting up the kind of colour contrast that runs through Renoir work from 1880, when his brushwork was loosening and his palette was turning brighter and more varied than in his earlier Impressionist years.
The paint sits thick in places, thin in others. Her hair is a tangle of short curling strokes, the cat a few longer ones laid close together, the chemise built from quick strokes of white and grey that catch the light differently depending on where you stand. Renoir worked fast when a pose was fleeting, and the picture still carries that speed.
The hand-painted reproduction
Our painters recreate this scene as a hand-painted oil painting reproduction, built up layer by layer in artist-grade oils rather than printed. They match the warm red of the chair and the cool blue of the skirt stroke by stroke, and they keep the loose, feathery handling of the fur and hair so the surface holds real texture, not a flat copy. This fine art reproduction is a painted object, with its own ridges and brush marks, made to be looked at closely and from a distance both.

Live with this picture for a while and it keeps giving up small things: the way the pink of her cheek warms the grey of the cat, the single strap that never quite falls, the stripe in her stocking that only shows at certain hours of light.
