Description
Thin washes of pigment build the ground of this canvas, laid down quickly to hold the light of an open sky. Edges soften where distant land meets air, then sharpen again near the foreground rock, a contrast that gives the picture its sense of depth without any heavy modelling. The paint sits light in places, almost dry, and thickens where a shadow needed weight.
About Square Hills, 1200 Miles Above St. Louis
Out of that handling the subject appears: a formation of pale bluffs rising along the upper Missouri, seen from the deck or bank at a great remove from the settled towns behind. Catlin worked on the frontier at a moment when few artists ventured so far west, and the picture carries that sense of first witness. There is no crowd of incident here, only the land recorded plainly, the sky given room, the hills allowed to hold the eye without competition from figures or story.
Colour is kept narrow, ochres and grey-greens against a bleached sky, and the restraint reads as observation rather than decoration. It belongs to the run of landscape studies Catlin made travelling the river country, work done fast and on the spot, closer to notation than to finished studio painting, and that speed is part of what still holds attention in it.
The hand-painted reproduction
ByMuseum artists recreate this composition by hand, an oil on canvas reproduction built up in the same layered, worked way as the original, with the palette matched and the brushwork left visible rather than smoothed away. Each piece is a painted object, not a print, so the surface carries real texture: the built passages sit slightly raised, the thinner washes let the canvas weave show through, and the picture changes gently as the light in a room changes over the day. On a wall that gets soft, indirect light, in a hallway or a study where the eye can rest on open space, it sets a quiet, steady mood rather than a dramatic one.
