Description
A dying man lies on a white bed with his mouth open and his skin already pale, while monstrous creatures crowd behind him in a red glow. On the right, Saint Francis Borgia stands in a black habit with a halo around his head, raising one hand and holding out a crucifix that sprays blood towards the bed. A round window, half covered by a green curtain, gives the dark room its only light.
About the Painting
St. Francis Borgia Helping a Dying Impenitent is also known as Saint Francis Borgia Assisting a Dying Man. Goya painted it in 1788 for the chapel of Saint Francis Borgia in Valencia Cathedral, where the original oil on canvas remains. The chapel’s patron, the Duchess of Osuna, was a descendant of the saint, and Goya painted two side canvases for it. This is the first work in which his fantastic monsters appear, long before the Black Paintings of his later years.
Your reproduction is painted to order by hand in oil on canvas. Choose an available size that keeps the composition in proportion, then select the presentation and framing option that suits your space.
The hand-painted reproduction
Oil paint gives the reproduced image a physical surface with brushwork and changes of tone built in layers. The aim is to preserve the relationships that make the composition recognisable, including the arrangement of the figures and the balance of light and dark. It is a newly painted interpretation of the historical work, rather than a printed canvas or a mechanical transfer.
