About Stratford Mill

The painting shows a working stretch of river near a mill, with boys fishing at the bank and trees leaning in over the water. Constable built the scene from direct study of a landscape he knew well from boyhood, and that familiarity shows in the ease of the arrangement: nothing feels staged, though every element is placed with care. The sky takes up a generous share of the canvas, banked with cloud that shifts the light across the water and the grass below.

Colour stays close to the natural range of an English river scene, greens and browns worked through with grey sky and small touches of warmer light. The brushwork carries much of the feeling here, loose in the foliage and sky, firmer where the mill and the figures need definition. It belongs to the run of large exhibition canvases Constable produced in the 1820s, work that grew out of his conviction that ordinary countryside, painted honestly, could carry as much weight as grander subjects.
