Grey granite, pale gold light, and a wash of blue haze meet across this small study, the colours sitting close together as if Bierstadt were testing how far restraint could carry a Yosemite scene. Warm ochre rock catches the sun on one side of the valley while the opposite wall falls into cool shadow, the two temperatures balancing each other rather than competing. A thin band of green marks the valley floor, almost lost beneath the scale of the cliffs above it.
