Most of the outdoor scenes by Constable turn on the movement of English weather across cultivated land, the play of cloud shadow over a working countryside he knew from childhood. Here the setting is Coleorton, the grounds of a private estate, and the subject is a memorial rather than a farm or a river valley, a stone tribute to Sir Joshua Reynolds set among bare trees.
