Description
In late July 1890, word reached the small circle of artists close to Vincent van Gogh that he had died in Auvers-sur-Oise, and among those who travelled to attend the burial was Emile Bernard, a friend and frequent correspondent who had exchanged letters with Van Gogh for years. Bernard later set down his memory of that day in paint, producing a work that stands apart in his output: not a landscape or a formal figure study but a record of grief among people who had gathered to bury one of their own.
About Funeral of Vincent Van Gogh
The composition gathers a small group of mourners in quiet proximity, their forms arranged with the same attention to structure that marks Bernard work of the period, though here that structure serves solemnity rather than decoration. Colour is restrained, the palette weighted toward the muted tones suited to the occasion, and the brushwork carries none of the vibrancy Bernard is known for elsewhere. Instead there is a deliberate stillness, figures held close together as if the painting itself were keeping vigil.
This is Bernard working at the edge of his usual formal concerns, letting personal loss shape a canvas that might otherwise have been given over to the flattened planes and bold outlines associated with his Pont-Aven years. The result is closer to reportage than invention, a painted account from someone who was actually present, and that immediacy gives the work a weight that few other Post-Impressionist paintings carry.
The hand-painted reproduction
Each ByMuseum canvas is recreated by hand in oil, with a trained painter working from the original palette and rebuilding the surface stroke by stroke rather than reproducing it mechanically. The result is a museum quality oil painting reproduction, one where the texture of the paint and the visible movement of the brush remain part of the object itself, not flattened away as they would be on a printed sheet. Displayed in a study or a room set aside for reflection, it suits anyone drawn to the human side of art history rather than its more decorative moments, a collector who wants a painting that carries a story rather than simply filling a wall.
