The Last Day of Pompeii by Karl Bryullov
A city collapses beneath a sky of fire in Karl Bryullov’s monumental The Last Day of Pompeii. Painted between 1830 and 1833, the work captures the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79—not from a distant historical perspective, but through the terror, courage and instinctive tenderness of the people caught within it.
Across the crowded scene, families struggle to remain together. Parents shield their children, a young man carries an elderly figure to safety, and frightened citizens turn towards a sky illuminated by lightning and volcanic flame. Falling statues and fractured architecture signal the destruction of Pompeii, while each gesture reveals a different human response to catastrophe.
Bryullov developed the composition after visiting the excavations at Pompeii and studying accounts by Pliny the Younger. He combines the carefully modelled bodies and balanced structure of Neoclassicism with the movement, emotional intensity and dramatic light associated with Romanticism. Cold flashes of lightning cut through the darkness while the orange glow of Vesuvius spreads across the figures, giving the enormous crowd both clarity and theatrical force.
First exhibited in Italy in 1833, the painting brought Bryullov international recognition and became one of the defining achievements of nineteenth-century Russian art. The original is now held by the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg. Karl Bryullov’s surname is also commonly transliterated as “Briullov,” the spelling used elsewhere in the ByMuseum catalogue.
