A barge horse gathers itself against the sky, front legs folded beneath its body as it clears a low timber barrier on the towpath, while a boy rider leans forward into the motion and a companion looks on from a moored boat below. The action is caught at its most precarious instant, the animal suspended between effort and release, and the low horizon opens onto a wide reach of Suffolk river and cloud that gives the leap all the more drama by contrast with the stillness around it.
About Leaping Horse
This is one of the six large canvases that Constable produced for exhibition at the Royal Academy in the 1820s, the so-called six-footers that mark the height of his ambition to bring the ordinary business of rural life onto the scale usually reserved for history painting. The scene draws on the working landscape of the River Stour, though the artist reworked the composition more than once, and the surviving underpainting shows how much he adjusted the placement of trees, the angle of the horse, and the fall of the barrier to sharpen the central action. Light moves in broken passages across the water and foliage, built from small, loaded strokes rather than smooth transitions, and this handling gives the sky its characteristic movement and the greenery its flicker of wind and weather.
The palette favours the deep greens and silvered greys that Constable returned to throughout his career, applied with a loaded brush that leaves ridges and drags of paint still visible at close range, a technique some contemporaries found rough but which later painters recognised as remarkably forward-looking.
