About Marquise De Pompadour
The sitter, Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, better known by her court title, was among the most influential women at the eighteenth-century French court, and Boucher painted her more than once in the years when she shaped taste at Versailles. Here she appears at ease, surrounded by the accessories of refined leisure, her pose relaxed but composed, her gaze direct without being formal. The arrangement of drapery, furniture, and figure follows the curving, ornamental logic of the Rococo, where nothing is static and every line answers another.
Boucher was, by this point in his career, the preferred painter of the French aristocracy, and the confidence of that position shows in the ease of the brush. Detail is concentrated where the eye should linger, at the face and hands, while the surrounding fabric and setting are allowed to dissolve into passages of pure colour and light touch.
