About News Boys
Blythe worked in a realist mode that owed little to polish. His brushwork is loose and often abrupt, built up in patches of light and shadow rather than smooth transitions. In The News Boys, the boys themselves are rendered with a rough, almost sketch-like touch, while the background falls away into darker, less resolved passages. This contrast pulls the eye toward the figures and gives the scene its sense of immediacy.
