Description
In 1808, as a young pensioner at the French Academy in Rome, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres sent this canvas to Paris as one of his required academic envois, a demonstration piece meant to prove his progress to the judges back home. He called it simply Seated Woman; the name by which it is known today came later, from a nineteenth century owner who would give this Valpincon Bather reproduction its lasting title.
About Valpincon Bather Reproduction
The canvas shows a seated nude viewed entirely from behind, her torso turned just enough to open her back to the viewer while her face stays hidden beneath a striped turban. She sits on a white draped bed, one foot tucked under a fold of fabric, the other bare against the sheet. Ingres gives almost nothing away about who she is or what she is thinking, and builds the whole picture instead around the long, uninterrupted line of her spine and the even, diffused light that settles across her skin.
The palette stays restrained, pale drapery against warm flesh tones, with none of the incident or drama that a Romantic contemporary might have reached for. Contours are smooth and idealized in the Neoclassical manner, the paint handled so that brushwork all but disappears into the modeling of form. This was the first major nude of the career of Ingres, and the pose would return, multiplied and rearranged, decades later in The Turkish Bath.
The hand-painted reproduction
A ByMuseum artist builds this Valpincon Bather reproduction by hand, in oil on canvas, working layer by layer to match the pale drapery, the warm flesh tones, and the long unbroken contour of the back that anchors the original composition. The result is a fine art reproduction and oil painting reproduction in the fullest sense, a painted surface with its own depth of colour and texture, not a printed facsimile. Collectors who look closely at condition and surface will find the same qualities here: visible paint, built up stroke by stroke, rather than a flat reproduction with no surface to speak of.
