Vineyards in the Bordeaux region supplied Jules Breton with a subject close to his lifelong interest: the labour of ordinary people bound to the land. The Vintage at Chateau Lagrange grew out of a visit to one of the great wine estates during harvest season, at a point in the career of Breton when rural work had become his central subject. Rather than paint the owners or the house, he turned his attention to the pickers moving through the rows, a choice that runs through much of his work from this period.

The canvas gathers a group of harvesters at their task, baskets in hand, set against the low autumn light that falls across the vines. Breton arranges the figures with the same care he gave to his fieldworkers in earlier paintings, each one placed to lead the eye across the row rather than to stand apart from it.
