Rain falls in fine, near-vertical strokes over the river Yerres, dissolving the far bank into a soft grey haze while the near water breaks into a thousand small ripples. The surface of the river carries most of the incident: broken reflections, the pale sky pressing low, a stillness interrupted only by weather. It is a quiet picture, built almost entirely from the study of falling water and the water it falls on.

About Yerres, Rain

Caillebotte painted this scene during the years he spent at his family estate along the Yerres, a stretch of the countryside southeast of Paris that gave him one of his most sustained subjects. Unlike the crowded boulevards and bridges he painted in the city, this canvas turns inward, toward a private, almost meditative observation of weather itself. The composition has no anecdote, no figures to explain it; the rain and the river are enough. Horizontal bands of tone, muted greens sliding into silvered greys, hold the picture together, while the vertical rhythm of the rain cuts gently across them.
