A vendor stands behind a table crowded with plucked and hanging fowl, her face weathered and turned toward the viewer with the same steady attention given to the woven baskets and glistening carcasses around her. Light falls flat and even across the stall, picking out feathers, wicker, and skin with equal candor. Nothing in the arrangement asks to be looked at more than anything else, and that is the point.

About Vendor of Fowl 1560S

Pieter Aertsen built his reputation on scenes exactly like this one, where the business of selling food takes the place once reserved for saints and kings. The composition is dense and close to the picture plane, so the goods and the seller press forward into the space of the room they hang in. His brushwork is direct rather than polished, describing the sheen of feather and the grain of wood without smoothing anything over. Colour is used plainly too, favouring the ochres and greys of a working stall over any decorative flourish.

This picture belongs to the middle years of the sixteenth century, when Aertsen and painters working in his circle were reshaping what a serious painting could depict. By giving a market seller the scale and gravity of history painting, he argued, without needing to say so, that ordinary labor deserved the same regard. The result has become a famous painting for exactly this reason, cited whenever the history of genre painting in the Netherlands is told.
