About Wash Day
Blythe worked in the vein of American genre realism, but his touch was rougher and more idiosyncratic than the polished academic painters of his day. In Wash Day the composition is built from a careful arrangement of tonal weight, dark against the pale linens, shadow against the worn boards of a shed or porch, so that the eye is led from the immediate business of the scene toward its quieter margins. Edges are handled with a certain bluntness that gives the figures weight and presence rather than prettiness, a hallmark of his manner throughout the 1850s and early 1860s, when he moved between Pittsburgh and other river towns painting the life he found there.
What holds the picture together is the interplay between activity and stillness. The washtub and the figure bent over it carry the visual centre, while the surrounding space, rendered with looser, more economical brushwork, allows the main action to breathe.
