Description
Celestial choirs erupt into song as the universe takes its first breath, angelic bodies arcing skyward in a chorus that fills the entire heavens. This is the instant William Blake sets before us: the morning of creation itself, when, according to the Book of Job, the sons of God shouted for joy at the unveiling of the world.
About When the Morning Stars Sang Together
The composition rises rather than recedes, stacking tiers of soaring figures so that the eye is pulled continually upward, away from any fixed horizon. Blake arranges his celestial beings in postures of exaltation, arms flung wide, bodies stretching beyond the edges of the frame as though the picture cannot quite contain them. This vertical thrust was central to how Blake understood spiritual experience: the imagination straining always toward the infinite, refusing the limits of the earthly and the literal.
The palette moves between cool blues and luminous whites, with passages of warm gold breaking through like light striking cloud from behind. That contrast of temperature does much of the emotional work, suggesting a vastness that is overwhelming in scale yet strangely tranquil in mood. The picture belongs to the visionary watercolours and tempera works Blake made in his later years, when illustrating scripture gave him licence to build entire cosmologies from a few verses of text, and when his line grew freer even as his subjects grew larger than life.
Each ByMuseum oil painting reproduction of this composition is painted by hand, not printed, by a trained artist working in oil on artist-grade canvas. The painter studies the original palette closely, rebuilding the cool celestial blues and the passages of golden light layer by layer so that the brushwork and surface texture remain visible under raking light, the way an oil on canvas reproduction should read up close. The result is a painted object with real depth of colour, suited to a wall where it will be seen daily rather than glanced at once.
The hand-painted reproduction
Live with the piece and it keeps shifting. Some mornings the golden light seems to press forward from the canvas; others the blues recede and the figures seem to lift free of the surface entirely, still singing.
