During his years travelling the American plains in the 1830s, George Catlin set himself the task of recording the tribes, landscapes, and animals of the western frontier before, as he feared, they vanished under the advance of settlement. Wild Horses at Play belongs to this broader project, a study made in the field and later worked up into a finished picture, capturing a band of mustangs in unguarded motion rather than posed for a formal portrait.
